Wei Ge received his BSc in zoology from Nanjing University, China (1982), MSc in fish genetics and breeding from the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1985), and PhD in physiology at the University of Alberta, Canada, under the supervision of Professor Richard E. PETER (1993). He completed his postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Basic Biology, Japan, with Professor Yoshitaka NAGAHAMA (1993-1995), supported by a fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). In 1995, he joined the Department of Biology (now the School of Life Sciences) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where he progressed from Assistant Professor (1995-1999) to Associate Professor (1999-2004) and then Professor (2004-2015). During his time at CUHK, he founded the Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) program and served as its founding director (2009-2012). His commitment to teaching excellence was recognized with two Vice-Chancellor's Exemplary Teaching Awards and four Faculty of Science Exemplary Teaching Awards.
In 2013, Dr. Ge joined the University of Macau (UM) as Chair Professor and played a key role in establishing the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), serving as Acting Dean (2013-2014), Associate Dean (2015-2018) and the Director of the Centre of Reproduction, Development and Aging (CRDA) (2013-present). Since 2018, he has served as Vice Rector (Research) at UM and various other administrative roles, including the Interim Dean of the Graduate School (2018-2019), Interim Dean of the School of Business Administration (FBA) (2022-2023), and Interim Director of the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) (2024-present). He also chaired the Board of Directors of UMTec Limited (2018-2022) and spearheaded the establishment of UMCERT Limited, serving as its first Chairman (2021-2022).
Dr. Ge’s research focuses on reproductive development and endocrinology, using the zebrafish as a model organism. His research interests include the endocrine regulation of reproduction by pituitary hormones, especially gonadotropins (FSH and LH) and growth hormone (GH); paracrine signaling networks within ovarian follicles involving various growth factors, particularly the activin-inhibin-follistatin system, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, and epidermal growth factor (EGF) family; the impact of environmental endocrine disruptors on reproduction; reproductive aging; and genetic modelling of human diseases in zebrafish. His work employs a range of techniques in cell and molecular biology, physiology and pharmacology, and genetics, including genome editing. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and presented over 100 conference papers.
Dr. Ge has held leadership roles in numerous scientific societies, including the International Federation of Comparative Endocrinological Societies (IFCES) (Council member, 2009-2013), the Asia and Oceania Society for Comparative Endocrinology (AOSEC) (Council member, 2012-present; Secretary General, 2023-present), the International Society for Fish Endocrinology (ISFE) (Council member, 2012-2020), the Chinese Society of Comparative Endocrinology (Council member, 2013-present; Vice President 2018-present), the Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences (Executive council member, 2023-present), and the Zebrafish Branch of the Chinese Zoological Society (Executive council member, 2020-present). His early research was recognized with the Second Prize from the Hubei Association for Science and Technology (1985), the First Prize of the Natural Science Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1994), and the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award of China (1995). Currently, Dr. Ge also serves as Specialty Chief Editor of Developmental Endocrinology (Frontiers in Endocrinology) and Associate Editor for several other international journals including Experimental Endocrinology (Frontiers in Endocrinology), General and Comparative Endocrinology, and Neuroendocrinology.
